Riding the Gamut of Emotions – While Seeking God’s Will

SADNESS - About 2 weeks ago we received the news that we had been waiting for but dreaded. Our dear Regional Director, Calvin Clark, went to be with the Lord after a battle with pancreatic cancer for a little over a year. We had prayed. We had encouraged Cal and Carol many times. We upheld them in prayer. We pleaded with the Lord. But we know He knows best and loves us most. We are confident in the Lord and at peace with His ways. Join us in prayer for Carol and others who have lost their mates during this last year. There have been many. See the accompanying article about Cal and Carol´s ministry: https://www.abwe.org/blog/tribute-cal-clark

EXCITEMENT - Our pastor asked if we could accompany Ronaldo and Thalita (and their two young boys) and Leilane, their colleague while in East Timor, on a survey trip to Madeira Island, Portugal. They had purchased tickets a couple weeks ago looking to spend about 3 weeks there researching ministry opportunities. It was exciting to think of going with them.  Surveying new fields is something I have always enjoyed. Lynda and Thalita have been talking about this trip and praying about it for weeks in their weekly counseling time.

DISAPPOINTMENT - We looked at the restrictions for travel as well as costs and timing. Since 2nd semester weekly classes will only start Aug. 16 this year, we could fit this trip in. We tried earnestly to purchase the tickets most of the day on Wed., but to no avail because of our credit cards being from the US. Thursday morning, I went off to try to purchase tickets where I could pass my card in a machine only to find another roadblock. We were disappointed but worked on aligning our spirits with what it seemed was God’s will.

ELATION - Friday, as we talked more with our pastor, Ronaldo and Thalita, and investigated further options, we decided to try again with a different agency ---- AND WE SUCEEDED!!! After working all of Saturday, we have tickets to travel two days after our colleagues – July 27 to August 6 as well as hotel reservations for 9 days on Madeira Island!! REJOICE WITH US!! This trip will need lots of prayer – we’ll write again soon with ways you can be praying.

DETERMINATION - Currently, we are in the throes of correcting exercises and tests for the two classes this last semester. Lynda is helping but it still is a daunting task. Thanks for praying for us these days. Pray God will give us the determination needed and efficiency in the task.

ANTICIPATION - Next Thursday 7/15, we will travel to a hotel outside of town for a retreat for pastors and leaders through Sunday noon.  This retreat is always a time of refreshment and fellowship with former students now ministering as well as getting to know new friends.  Then, Monday 7/19, we will travel up to the mountains where we will have 3 ½ days to ourselves in a beautiful setting which friends here provide as a respite place to pastors and Christian workers.  We are really looking forward to that time to relax and enjoy one another and the beauty of the area, since this semester has been grueling in many ways. Pray for refreshment.

DEDICATION -Returning to Fortaleza, we’ll have 5 days to work on preparing for our Missionary Life class next semester. We need to work on revising our teaching materials and working out a schedule for missionaries who will visit our class to share particular lessons God has taught them that will help our students, either in preparing to go as missionaries or in being a strong support system for missionaries sent out through their churches.  Your prayers for wisdom and efficiency in this time are much appreciated!
